The castle is situated on the hill of the Sierra de la Villa, which is 550m above sea level.
From the castle you have a fantastic view of the town of Villena
The origen of the castle dates back to the 12 century Islamic Era, but in the middle of the 13th century the Christian army on behalf of King Jaime I of Aragon conquered Villena
King Jaime gave the fortress to King Fernando III of Castillon, who gave it to his son Dn. Manuel.Villena
then became the head of the "Señorio", whose holder was always a member of Royal Castillian descent.
The "Señorio" of Villena
was converted into a Marquesado extending its power throughout Alicante
, Albacete, Cuenca, Toledo, Murcia, Valladolid and Guadalajara.
The are no remains of the first Marquis, but the ones built by his sucesser Don Juan Pacheco can be seen easily.
Pacheco also built the last two floors of the tower of Homage and upon it his coat of arms is ingraved on one of the side walls.
