Novelda is a busy industrial town approximately 25km from Alicante City and 30 minutes from the great beaches at Santa Pola.
Home to 27,000 people, the town produces marble from the many quarries in the surrounding area, as well as limestone, clay and gypsum. As well as these industrial activities, the area is also well known for producing saffron and grapes. There are also factories making alcohol, soap, leather products and chocolate amongst other things. Despite all this, Novelda is still a pretty town and is approached through the beautiful valley of the River Vinalopo.
There’s plenty to see here including the ruins of the Castle of Mola from Novelda’s days as a Moorish Fortress town. The modernist church here is akin to Gaudi’s work and is quite unusual. Novelda is indeed a modern town and is very well known for its Modernista architecture and even has a museum dedicated to the subject. It has beautiful plazas and plenty of bars and restaurants. Theres also a good weekly market and is handily located next to the town of Elda. It can be found just off the N340 motorway so has great transport links to the rest of the province.
