Mutxamel is located just north of Alicante City with a population of around 23000 people. It’s proximity to the capital of the province means that many locals rely on Alicante for work. In turn, Mutxamel became a resort for the people of Alicante, many of whom built grand summer houses here.
Mutxamel still has extensive areas of land used for agriculture. Much has been irrigated many years ago utilising the waters of the Monnegre River. Clever use of irrigation channels, ditches canals and dams means the land is fertile and good for farming.
The town has all you need in terms of facilities, shops, bars and restaurants. The Peñacerrada Palace and the Parish Church, with its 14th-century gothic tower, are worth a look. There are also plenty of golf courses in the surrounding area. The people celebrate the traditional fiesta but of particular importance is that of the patron saint of the town Our Lady of Loreto who is said to have performed several miracles in Mutxamel in the 16th Century.
