Dolores is a small, quiet town with a population of about 8000 people. It has avoided the mass development of the coast, and although it is ideally located just 30 minutes from Alicante airport and 10km from the beaches, it has yet to become a foreign enclave. This however may all change as more and more house hunters seek a place to live away from the over crowded resorts and look inland.
Dolores is located in the heart of the area known as the Segura Huerta (vegetable garden) and has great transport links with Elche, Benidorm, Guardamar and La Marina thanks to the proximity of the N340 and AP7 motorways.
The town has a market every Friday, which although small has everything you may need. There are also several golf courses nearby, with plans approved to build a course and the associated developments in Dolores itself.
The town celebrates several festivals and there are a few worth mentioning. The Feria de Agosto is the August Fair which attracts over a thousand caballeros and their horses for various contests. Other animals such as dogs and cattle are also included and it is a great spectacle. The Fiesta de la Virgen in September, celebrates the patron saint of the town and includes a procession and a bull run of sorts.
